Advanced Laparoscopic Techniques for Gynecologists with Special Emphasis on Suturing

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This two-day course provides an intensive practical, hands-on laboratory and animate lab experience in the various laparoscopic techniques needed by gynecologic surgeons. Participants will practice laparoscopic suturing techniques including suturing in the Vertical Zone™ developed by Charles M. Koh, MD. The course consists of a half day of lectures provided by the faculty of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, followed by intensive training sessions and an animate lab where the participants can apply the techniques and skills acquired.

EDUCATIONAL NEED
This course is supplemental to the training provided during residency. It will add knowledge and proficiency in selection of patients and surgical skills.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the indications and criteria for patient selection for laparoscopic procedures
  • Understand the technology and techniques used in laparoscopic surgery
  • Utilize skills learned and apply it to direct patient care
  • Understand the ergonomics, theory and rational for laparoscopic suturing
  • Apply the laparoscopic suturing skills learned in relevant surgical situations

TARGET AUDIENCE
This course has been designed for Obstetrics and Gynecology Residents, Fellows and Attending Physicians with the desire to advance their knowledge of gynecologic laparoscopy and laparoscopic skills with special emphasis on laparoscopic suturing.

EDUCATIONAL METHODOLOGY
Lectures on common gynecologic conditions pertaining to the use of minimally invasive surgical procedures
Exercises in laparoscopic techniques for suturing and knot tying
Simulated exercises on laparoscopic trainers
Live surgical exercises on animate models supervised by faculty mentors

Participants will perform series of tasks to advance laparoscopic dexterity, orientation and navigation under faculty supervision.

Participants will practice different needle handling and suturing techniques (extra and intra corporeal suturing, C-techniques, etc.) under faculty supervision.
