The Director

Atul K. Madan, MD, FACS, was appointed Director of the Center of Excellence for Laparoscopic and Minimally Invasive Surgery in 2007.  He is Chief of the Division of Laparoendoscopic and Bariatric Surgery and Associate Professor of Surgery in the DeWitt Daughtry Family Department of Surgery.

Dr. Madan is a world-renowned expert in laparoscopic and bariatric surgery. He came to Miami from Memphis where he performed the first laparoscopic gastric bypass in that city. In addition, he has performed the first laparoscopic gastric bypass in a liver transplant patient. He has published over 150 articles. Dr. Madan has performed over 700 laparoscopic gastric bypasses and laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding procedures in his career. He has performed many revisional bariatric procedures and was one of the first to offer an endoscopic treatment (a procedure without any incisions) for weight regain after open and laparoscopic gastric bypass.

Dr. Madan is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS), and Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). His national expertise in bariatric surgery was recognized by ASMBS, SLS and SAGES as indicated by his service on various committees of these societies. Furthermore, Dr. Madan has received multiple awards during his career including the SAGES Young Investigator Award. Many of his presentations have received honors and awards at the International Federation of Societies for Obesity, Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, and Association of Association of Cancer Education.

He is committed to providing training, educational and research opportunities to nurses, residents, fellows and physicians in the multidisciplinary environment at the Center.
